St. Mary Medical Center was founded in August 1923 by the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word to serve the health care needs of Long Beach and the surrounding communities. Today, the hospital and clinics continue to deliver quality medical services and programs with a commitment to provide the best patient experience for everyone who need its care. More than 600 physicians and more than 1,350 employees work at Dignity Health St. Mary Medical Center. Health Scholars serve in the 415 bed in-patient facility, several out-patient clinics and administrative departments.
A variety of clinical opportunities are always available, but may change based on the site’s needs. Areas typically available at this site include:

As a Health Scholar, you may have the opportunity to shadow a health professional preceptor in addition to clinical opportunities. Preceptors include Physicians, Nurses, Nurse Practitioners, Physical Therapists and Dentists in one or more of the following areas:
Health System Opportunities
As a Health Scholar, you may have the opportunity to explore Administrative opportunities in addition to clinical opportunities. For those interested in administration, you will complete at least one clinical rotation and then apply for an administrative department. The departments and projects vary based on the site’s needs. Student Leadership Program
Scholars may also gain health care administration and leadership experience by joining our student leadership program.
All Junior Health Scholars who enter the program are paired with a college-age Health Scholar mentor for the first 6 months of the program. Through the mentor program, Junior Health Scholars receive benefits such as:
